Frida Karlsson hadn't won a freestyle mile race in over four years. But right now, the Swedish cross-country star is unstoppable. With her dominant 10-kilometer Olympic gold - her second straight in Val di Fiemme - she is writing herself into skiing history. Ebba Andersson secured a new blue-and-yellow one-two.

Add Frida Karlsson to the historic list as one of only four Swedish female athletes to win two Olympic gold medals in the same Games.

"What's happening?" a jubilant Karlsson tells SVT.

"It just makes my body tingle and I feel like I'm being carried along the track by everyone. It's so much fun just to ride."

In Thursday's 10-kilometer freestyle, she was once again in the top flight on the Olympic track. The 26-year-old often goes out hard, often so hard that she burns out. This time she took it a little easier. For a while.

At the first intermediate time, Karlsson was only 0.8 seconds ahead of Norwegian Astrid Øyre Slind, 1.1 seconds ahead of the USA's Jessie Diggins and 2.1 seconds ahead of national teammate Ebba Andersson.

"I tried to open in a controlled manner and felt that I found a good rhythm, it was a nice dance," the double gold medalist tells SVT.

Karlsson herself says that she feels so relaxed during the Olympics - and during the race she barely felt any fatigue.

"I got so much energy and inspiration that I didn't feel tired until I reached the finish line."

Knocked everyone out

Halfway through the race, Frida Karlsson had knocked everyone out.

Diggins: 23.4 seconds behind. Slind: 24.4 seconds behind. Andersson: 26.2 seconds behind.

It was already clear that the excitement would be about the medals behind Frida Karlsson, who was, as the Norwegians put it, in "insane" shape.

New double victory

The second individual Olympic gold of her career, the second in a few days, was as commanding as the first. She was 46.6 seconds ahead of the silver medalist, who was also Swedish.

As in the skiathlon, Ebba Andersson produced a blue-and-yellow one-two by fighting for the silver, while Moa Ilar (11th) and Emma Ribom (13th) were further down the results list.

Andersson had to work hard for her medal, finishing three seconds ahead of American Jessie Diggins in bronze.

"I was just trying to extract the strength I had today and I really succeeded in that," Andersson tells SVT.

"I'm still very happy that it's enough to get all the way to a silver medal."

This was otherwise a race where the statistics spoke strongly against Frida Karlsson.

Until Thursday, she had not won a 10-kilometer freestyle race since a World Cup victory in Lillehammer on December 4, 2021. The World Cup gold in Trondheim last year was in skating, but that was a tough 5-kilometer race.

Can equal Olympic record

At the same time, the skiathlon gold medal on Saturday showed that the 26-year-old from Sollefteå is in the shape of her life.

"Puzzle pieces have fallen into place. Everyone is maturing as a person and as a skier. That's something I notice about Frida. She's probably in a very good place right now," said women's coach Stefan Thomson before the 10-kilometer race.

Regarding that gold statistic, by the way: how many Swedish Olympic athletes have won three gold medals at the same Games?

The answer is one.

As early as Saturday, Frida Karlsson can join Wilhelm Carlberg - the shooter who won three gold medals at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm - at the top. The women's relay will be decided in Val di Fiemme.
