Netflix has distanced itself from the film star – who is not allowed to participate in the campaigning ahead of the Oscar Gala, and director Jacques Audiard has also done so.
The actress got into trouble after it emerged that she had written derogatory and racist texts about Islam and Muslims on social media almost ten years ago. She also wrote derogatory comments about George Floyd, the black man who was murdered by American police in 2020.
It was after hearing an interview with Audiard that the star decided to keep quiet, writes The Wrap.
Then I decided – for the film, for Jacques, for the actors, for the incredible team that deserves it, for the beautiful adventure we all had together, to let the work speak for itself – in the hope that my silence will allow the film to be appreciated for what it is, a beautiful ode to love and diversity, says Gascón, who apologizes to all those who have been hurt.
The controversy comes after Karla Sofia Gascón made history as the first openly trans person to receive an Oscar nomination in the category of Best Actress. The film "Emilia Pérez" received a total of 13 Oscar nominations.
