Sunday, July 21, was the warmest day ever recorded, according to preliminary data from the EU's climate service Copernicus, writes Reuters.
The global average air temperature on Sunday was 17.09 degrees, which is slightly higher than the previous record from July last year of 17.08 degrees.
Large parts of the USA and parts of Europe and Russia have struggled with heatwaves over the past week.
Every month since June 2023 – thus 13 months in a row – has been classified as the warmest since measurements began, according to Copernicus.
Some researchers believe that 2024 may become even worse than 2023 in terms of heat, since climate change and the natural weather phenomenon El Nino – which ended in April – have driven temperatures even higher this year.
