The municipality has previously been cleared of liability in both the district court and the court of appeal. Now the Supreme Court has announced that the case will not be heard.
"I am disappointed. John Walter has no rights at all, and neither do we, his parents," says father Hans-Erik Sjöholm in a press release.
However, the case will be taken to the European Court of Justice.
"We think it's a tragedy and a betrayal of John Walter," says Alexandra Loyd, deputy director at the Center for Justice.
It was in May 2021 that the municipality placed the boy in the HVB home in Hagfors against his parents' wishes. Just over two weeks later, he ran away from home and was found drowned a few hours later.
