41-year-old Chestnut, from Westfield in Indiana, is thus in a bad position compared to his own record from 2021 of 76 hot dogs.

- I wish I had eaten a couple more. Sorry guys, said Chestnut to the cheering audience and promised to return next year.

It was Chestnut's 17th victory in the competition.

In the women's class, Miki Sudo from Tampa, Florida, took her eleventh winning title with 33 hot dogs. She apologized for performing worse than last year when the score was 51 hot dogs with bread.

The competition has been held since 1972 at a restaurant on Coney Island, Brooklyn. The participants came, apart from from the USA, from among other places Australia, the Czech Republic, Canada, the United Kingdom and Brazil.
