Jimmy Carter's death was first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper in the state of Georgia. He was the president in USA's history who lived the longest.
"Our founder, former US President Jimmy Carter passed away this afternoon in Plains, Georgia", writes Carter Center on X in a first brief comment.
Carter Center further stated that Jimmy Carter "was surrounded by his family" at the time of death. Thus, Carter died in the place where he was born 100 years ago.
"A hero"
"My father was a hero, not just for me but for everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and selfless love", writes son Chip Carter in a statement.
The media in the USA is praising the country's 39th president for his achievements both as president and for his efforts for human rights after his presidency.
"When he left the presidency, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his pursuit of peace and human rights", writes the Washington Post in a first comment.
Served others
Carter served as president for only one term, between 1977 and 1981. Democrat Carter was defeated by Republican Ronald Reagan, and the decisive factor in the presidential election was, among other things, the development in the Middle East and the many American diplomats held hostage in Tehran, Iran.
But Jimmy Carter continued his work for human rights, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
The White House announced shortly after the death notice that a state funeral is being prepared for Jimmy Carter. Carter Center announces that memorial services will be held in Atlanta and Washington DC, as well as a private memorial service in Plains.
