Japan's prime minister opposes changing succession rules, says no woman on the throne

Traditionally, only men can inherit the title of emperor in Japan. But opinion polls now show strong public support for changing the system so that women can also take the throne.

An expert panel has now investigated the issue and, in a report, recommends no changes to the system. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has previously called revisions to the rules an “urgent matter,” but now appears to have reversed course.

"The government, and I myself, respect this report," she says.
