Japan warns of avalanches as recent deadly snowfall begins to melt.

Persistent snowfall has paralyzed the northern regions since late January, with around two meters of snow recorded. People have found it difficult to leave their homes, and schools and businesses have remained closed.

On Wednesday, the temperature climbed to 8 degrees, increasing the risk that people could be injured or killed when heavy, wet lumps of snow fall from roofs, according to the authorities.

"We ask affected residents to be careful and alert to falling snow and avalanches," said Deputy Cabinet Secretary Masanao Ozaki.

The extreme snowfall has so far killed 35 people and injured 393 people around the country, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Authority.
