Japan summons US ambassador after suspected murder in Okinawa

Japan has summoned the U.S. ambassador in Tokyo in connection with a suspected murder that is now adding to tensions between the two countries.

The background is that a 20-year-old US Marine stationed in Okinawa Prefecture is suspected of murdering a 39-year-old woman at a hotel in the city of Naha.

The suspected murder reportedly took place on Saturday, reports Japanese television channel NHK.

The US military presence on Okinawa has drawn criticism from local sources, particularly in connection with alleged criminal misconduct by US military personnel. Japan is now demanding that the US military fully assist in the investigation into the suspected murder.
