The legendary Ingemar Stenmark applauded and appeared genuinely happy in the VIP stands. Meanwhile, at the finish line in Kitzbühel, Kristoffer Jakobsen exhaled deeply, a grateful smile directed toward the sky.

After all the setbacks this winter, Fabian Ax Swartz struck. For the first time, the Swedish slalom racer finished both runs in the same competition.

The question is whether 13th place is enough for a visit to the Olympic slopes in Bormio.

"We are following the entire week's competitions before making any announcements. We would like to have alpine skiers in both Bormio and Cortina," said Fredrik Joulamo of the Swedish Olympic Committee earlier this week.

Downhill skier Felix Monsén probably secured an Olympic spot with his top result, a 10th-place finish on Saturday.

Fabian Ax Swartz, 21, should also be in contention after finishing 17th in today's slalom.
