The bill was passed with 21 votes in favor, no one voted against, while six members chose to abstain from voting.
It is not possible to buy land in Greenland, it is owned by the state. However, you can acquire the right to farm a specifically measured area.
Notes attached to the bill state that it was drafted after it became known that there was "a certain interest" from abroad to buy property. The new law means that the starting point is that only Greenlandic, Faroese and Danish companies should be able to obtain land use rights and buy property. If you do not meet this requirement, you are instead required to have lived and paid taxes in Greenland for at least ten years.
The Danish newspaper Politiken recently reported that residents of Greenland with usufruct rights have experienced great interest from Americans in property purchases.
This in turn follows US President Donald Trump's many statements that he would like to control Greenland, which has caused tensions in the relationship with Denmark.
