80-year-old Pino Piromalli was arrested on Tuesday morning at an old farm that had been converted into a bunker, equipped with a sophisticated electronic system. He had been on the run since 2021, when he was released after serving a 22-year prison sentence.
According to an investigation, his criminal activity had not decreased at all during the long prison sentence, and despite being placed under surveillance after his release, he had, according to the police, resumed leadership of the operation in the port city of Gioia Tauro.
The arrested are suspected of involvement with the mafia, extortion, money laundering, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, and fraudulent transfer of assets.
During the investigation, the police, according to a statement, have reconstructed the 'Ndrangheta's criminal structures and activities.
