Since the Islamist-led rebels overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime in December, Israel has carried out hundreds of attacks against targets on Syrian soil. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in February that southern Syria must be completely demilitarized.
Earlier, the British-based Syrian Human Rights Observatory (SOHR) had reported that "Israeli fighter jets targeted Palmyra's military airbase".
Palmyra lies along an important road from Iraq through Syria. It was once the capital of the short-lived Palmyrene Empire, which stretched from present-day Turkey to Egypt. Nowadays, it is mostly known as an archaeological site.
