Following reports of drones from the Iran-allied Hezbollah militia, Israel bombed villages in southern Lebanon on Sunday morning. A few hours later, the Israeli military announced that it had also begun attacking Beirut's southern suburbs. Those were said to be targets linked to the Hezbollah militia.
AFP news agency journalists confirmed heavy explosions in the suburbs of the Lebanese capital.
Such attacks have previously hampered efforts to ease tensions between Iran and the United States. When Iran has protested Israel's actions, the United States has responded, prompting Israel to scale back its operations.
