Israel has killed a leader of the Islamist Hezbollah movement in an airstrike in the Lebanese capital Beirut. At least five people have been killed in the raid. Lebanon's president is appealing for international support to stop Israel's attack.

The Israeli military describes the raid on Sunday as a "targeted attack" and says Hezbollah's military chief of staff was killed in the attack. Hezbollah confirms that it is Ali Tabatabai, a military leader whom Israel has accused of building up the Iranian-backed group's capabilities.

According to data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, five people were killed and at least 28 people were injured in the attack in the Dahiyeh neighborhood in southern Beirut.

“Red line”

Hezbollah representative Mahmud Qomati told reporters on site at the area where Israeli warplanes carried out the attack that Israel had gone too far and the attack "has crossed a red line."

Lebanon appeals to the international community to act to stop the Israeli attacks on the country.

In a statement, President Joseph Aoun calls on the outside world to "intervene with determination to stop the attacks on Lebanon and its people."

Smoke over Beirut

After the raid, smoke was seen from the southern parts of the city and the attack is the first against Beirut since June.

Israeli attacks have escalated against targets in southern Lebanon in recent weeks, with Israel claiming that the Iranian-backed Hezbollah movement is trying to rebuild its military capabilities.

Israel and Hezbollah signed a ceasefire a year ago. In September of this year, the Lebanese government issued a plan for how the Islamist Hezbollah will disarm by the end of the year.
