Israel's government has approved the plan for a ceasefire in Gaza, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office. The message came after a long consultation between the government's ministers.

Approval applies to the first phase of the US peace plan and is said to include, among other things, that the Israeli military will withdraw to new lines within the Gaza Strip. In connection with this, the Israeli hostages will be released within 72 hours, reports The Times of Israel.

Israel had not yet disclosed all the details of the adopted plan on Friday morning.

”The government has just approved the framework for the release of all hostages – both living and deceased”, said the Israeli government during the night towards Friday.

The message came after a prolonged government meeting that lasted into Friday night, after resistance from, among others, the far-right ministers Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, according to Israeli media.

Thanked Americans

US envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner also participated in the meeting.

I want to personally thank you both, Steve and Jared. It has been long working days. You have worked around the clock, said Benjamin Netanyahu after the government meeting.

Israel's government has previously stated that a ceasefire would begin within 24 hours after the decision was made at the meeting. Whether that timeframe is still current is unclear.

Expected to send force

According to sources for the news agency AFP, the US will initially send a force of around 200 people to monitor a ceasefire between Israel and terrorist-stamped Hamas. Personnel from, among other things, the mediating countries Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey are also expected to be part of the force.

Israel's military has previously stated that after the initial withdrawal, it will continue to control just over half of the Gaza Strip, but that it will withdraw from large parts of the largest cities, Gaza City and Khan Yunis.

Over time, Trump's 20-point plan for peace means that Israel will gradually withdraw, while Hamas is disarmed.
