According to a joint statement, attempts will be made to establish new “security zones” in Lebanon. The Lebanese military will have control over the zones, from which the Iranian-backed Hezbollah would be banned.
The ceasefire is contingent on Hezbollah ceasing to attack Israel and on people with connections to the Shiite militia leaving areas south of the Litani River, the informal border for the Israeli presence in southern Lebanon.
"These steps enable further progress towards a more comprehensive peace and security agreement," the parties write in the statement.
However, Hezbollah is not part of the negotiations.
U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that he received promises from both Israel and Hezbollah to avoid an escalation, but new attacks occurred as recently as Wednesday.
New talks are to be held in two weeks.
