Israel advances in Gaza: "Jabalia is being erased"

Israeli tanks are pushing further into Jabalia in Gaza. From Bureij further south, reports are emerging of Israeli attacks with many fatalities. Gaza has been turned into a slaughterhouse, claims a former spokesperson for Unrwa.

According to Israel's military, 20 Palestinian fighters have been killed in Jabalia in northern Gaza in the past 24 hours, Israeli media reports.

At the same time, the city is being bombed from the air. According to medical sources, there are several casualties, but the constant bombardment makes it impossible to reach them. The Palestinian news agency Wafa reports on dozens of dead and injured lying on Jabalia's streets.

"Jabalia is being erased", residents warn on social media, according to Reuters.

Israel has urged residents to leave, but after a year of war, escape routes are limited.

"Industrial scale"

In video clips obtained by Qatar-based Al Jazeera, Israeli soldiers are seen shooting at a group of people fleeing from Jabalia. Chris Gunness, former spokesman for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees Unrwa, tells the media company that Gazans are being "slaughtered".

The past year has seen Gaza transformed from the world's largest outdoor prison to the world's largest concentration camp, he says.

Now Gaza has been transformed into an abattoir on an industrial scale, he continues, referring to the fact that many animals are "killed more humanely" than women and children are being killed in Gaza.

Many killed

In the past 24 hours, Israel has attacked 70 targets in the Gaza Strip, the military claims according to Israeli media.

Reports of casualties are also coming in from areas further south. According to civil defense in Hamas-ruled Gaza, around 20 Palestinians were killed in an attack on a three-story building in al-Bureij north of Dayr al-Balah. Among the dead are children, AFP writes.

Medical sources in Gaza report that over 40 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza so far on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Israel also announced that three Palestinians who participated in the October 7 attacks against Israel last year were killed in airstrikes on Gaza last week.
