Syrian security services have been cooperating with an international coalition led by the United States in what is described as a “precise security operation.”
"The operation resulted in the neutralization of the terrorist Mohammad Shahada, known as Abu Omar Shaddad, who is considered one of Syria's most prominent IS leaders," a statement from the Interior Ministry reads.
The operation is a confirmation of the effectiveness of international cooperation, the statement adds.
IS leader Taha al-Zoubi, also known as Abu Omar Tabiya, was arrested earlier Wednesday in the Damascus region, according to the state-run Sana news agency.
Last week, the US military carried out more than 70 strikes on various IS-related targets in Syria, with President Donald Trump describing the strikes as “revenge” for the killing of three Americans in a suspected IS attack earlier in December.
