The new documentary "Burning Ambition" depicts the history of the British heavy metal band and is based on interviews with the band and loyal fans - such as actor Javier Bardem and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich - as well as archival material.

Bruce Dickinson, singer in the band since 1981, is pleased with the result.

"It's interesting, dramatic, not afraid to show controversial moments, disagreements in the band and personal tragedies - everything that makes life real and worth living is included," he tells TT.

Left the band in 1993

Dickinson is referring in part to the rivalry between him and bassist and songwriter Steve Harris - who founded the band on December 25, 1975. The documentary depicts Harris' strong visions for Iron Maiden - and how this sometimes led to disagreements.

"I wouldn't change anything we've done. I think he would agree, but also say, 'Well, maybe we made a couple of decisions earlier that we should have changed,' but we didn't and everything went well," Dickinson says.

Since their formation, band members have come and gone, but many have played together for decades. Dickinson left the band in 1993 to pursue a solo career, and while the decision "had many negative aspects," he is convinced it was an experience that ultimately benefited Iron Maiden when he rejoined the band in 1999.

"Never talked to Steve"

Was there anything that could have made you stay in the band?

"It's a very difficult question," says Dickinson, adding that the band's agent advised him against talking about the departure with Harris.

"I never talked to Steve. I never said a word to him. It was very strange," Dickinson says, continuing:

"What I've learned about the music industry is that there are a lot of people who want to control everything. Musicians included, but also management, record labels, egos. People are really afraid of when musicians get together and talk honestly face to face. That's when the best things happen, sometimes maybe the worst, but at least it's real and honest."

"Burning Ambition" premieres in Sweden on May 8.
