Iranian ballistic missiles were fired at air bases in Jordan, Iran's Revolutionary Guard said overnight. Jordan's military said its air defences had intercepted eight missiles in its airspace, while Iran claimed "extensive damage."
Iran also said it had targeted attack drones at American helicopters and soldiers at an air base in the United Arab Emirates, and had shot down an American drone over the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the United Arab Emirates, an Iranian drone was shot down over the country's territorial waters, but the country rejected reports that Tehran had fired on a US base.
Attacks on the island
The Iranian attacks came just hours after US forces attacked two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday. Iranian state media reported that three people were killed and several others were injured in the US attack.
The US military leadership in the region says the goal of the attacks was to stop Iran from laying new mines in the shipping lane. The attacks are described as “limited, precise.”
The Revolutionary Guard said Iran's attacks on targets in Jordan were in response to the US strikes.
“We are not looking for war, but we will give a firm response to the aggressors,” Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on state television. Pezeshkian said later Monday at a regional summit in Kyrgyzstan that he wanted to see new dialogue.
We believe that it is neither in our nor the region's interest to continue the war, he said, adding that "the solution to the existing problems is dialogue and cooperation."
Sharper tone
US President Donald Trump had a sharper tone on Monday.
"We're going to hit hard. There will be a response," Trump told Fox News.
Trump has also published an AI-generated video on social media that purports to show an attack on the island of Kharg in the Persian Gulf and how it is "blown to pieces."
Hamid Bovard, head of the National Oil Company of Iran, dismissed Trump's post: "None of the ongoing work at Kharg has stopped," he said, according to Iran International.
