Thousands of prisoners are believed to have lost their lives in connection with the executions.

Nayeri sat on the so-called "death committee" that decided which political prisoners would live and which would die in Tehran. He was superior to Noury, who escorted the prisoners to and from the death committee and the execution chamber next door.

Hamid Noury was arrested at Arlanda after being lured to Sweden by a former political prisoner in 2019. He was, however, released on bail in Iran in 2023, after being handed over there as part of a controversial prisoner exchange to bring home Swedes imprisoned in Iran.

Nayeri was in his 70s and died according to the Iranian news agency Isna after a period of illness.
