Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry and state media are reporting two drone strikes in the exclave of Nakhchivan, which is sandwiched between northwestern Iran and Armenia.

One drone crashed into the main airport there, about 10 miles from the Iranian border, and reportedly caused a fire. The other crashed into a school compound. Two civilians were injured, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry in Baku.

The statement condemns the strikes as an attack on Azerbaijan and says the country strongly demands a detailed explanation from Iran as soon as possible. The Iranian ambassador has been summoned for talks.

"The Azerbaijani side reserves the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures," it says.

The country's Defense Ministry went a step further, announcing that the drone strikes would not go unanswered.

Azerbaijan's military has reinforced its positions along the border with Iran in recent days. President Ilham Aliyev visited the Iranian embassy the other day to express his condolences following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Azerbaijan's foreign minister is also reported to have recently spoken by phone with his Iranian counterpart and assured him that no other countries would be allowed to attack Iran from Azerbaijani soil.
