"He was injured, but will make a full recovery," Trump wrote, adding in a later post that the man was "seriously injured."

US forces managed to rescue the pilot using aircraft and helicopters. All soldiers involved are said to have made it out of Iran safely.

Trump, who says he will hold a press conference about the incident on Monday, calls the operation "one of the most daring search and rescue operations in United States history."

The crew member was stranded in Iran for more than a day after the US fighter jet was shot down on Good Friday. The other person on board the plane was rescued shortly after the crash.

The CIA located the pilot

American transport planes and military helicopters flew low and slow over Iran's mountainous terrain in the risky mission to find the missing pilot, who was the weapons officer on the downed F-15E plane, reported The Washington Post.

The CIA was the first to locate the pilot, according to information provided to The New York Times. The CIA tried to confuse Iranian forces, leading them to believe that the pilot had already been rescued and was on his way out of the country, a senior official told the newspaper.

While American special forces approached the pilot, fighter jets are said to have bombed and fired on nearby Iranian forces, according to the newspaper.

Aircraft destroyed

In connection with the operation, a reward was promised on Iranian state television for anyone who could capture the American. In a further segment, residents were reportedly urged to “target” any Americans they encountered.

At the same time, the Iranian military is said to have urged people not to harm the pilot.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Iranian state television that they had destroyed two of the C-130 Hercules transport planes and two Black Hawk helicopters used in the operation, AP reports.

Sources told the U.S. news agency that both helicopters were hit but were able to fly out of Iranian airspace. The two transport planes are said to have become unusable due to what were described as technical problems and were therefore blown up by U.S. soldiers.
