The Iranian Football Federation says it is in talks with FIFA about moving the country's group stage matches in this summer's World Cup from the United States - currently at war with Iran - to Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has opened the door to it, but FIFA has so far said that the game schedule remains as planned.
Iran still appears to plan to participate in the World Cup, but not on American soil.
"We will prepare for the World Cup. We will boycott the United States, but not the World Cup," federation chairman Mehdi Taj said in a video published by the state-controlled Fars news agency.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The opening match will be played in Mexico City on June 11.
