Region Gotland states that several factors have caused the shortage. Cleaning reservoirs has required large amounts of water, while leaks have occurred because of deep frost.
Islanders are now being urged to use tap water only for food, drink and essential hygiene to allow pressure to be restored. No bunkering is allowed.
"But if consumption increases again, we risk quickly ending up in a situation where the system becomes depressurized," says Patrik Johansson, unit manager of the drinking water unit at Region Gotland, in a press release.
The affected towns are Visby, Lummelunda, Brissund, Själsö, Väskinde, Vibble, Västerhejde, Tofta and Västergarn.
