Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, chief negotiator in contacts with the US, said, about a day after the first round of negotiations ended, that Iran will have control over the strait, which also borders Oman.
"The Strait of Hormuz will never return to the conditions before the war and will be managed by the Islamic Republic of Iran in accordance with international law," he said, according to the state news agency IRNA.
It is not entirely clear what conditions Ghalibaf is referring to. Before the war, the passage was free, but in May this year, Iran established a new authority to collect money from passing ships.
Iran and the United States agreed on Monday to establish communication channels to keep the shipping route through the strait open.
