Iran's president has announced the start of nuclear talks with the United States, state-run media reported. However, Iran does not want to acknowledge that it has faced an American ultimatum.

President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered such talks to begin, reports the pro-regime Fars news agency, citing an informed government source.

According to Iranian sources, the talks will be confined to the nuclear energy issue.

The US has sent a large naval fleet to the region, and President Donald Trump has warned that "time is running out" and urged Iran to meet him for negotiations.

At a press conference at the Foreign Ministry in Tehran earlier on Monday, a reporter asked whether Iran had received a direct ultimatum from the US. Spokesperson Esmail Baqaei responded that Iran is a country that "always behaves honestly and seriously in diplomatic processes, but never accepts ultimatums":

For that reason, such a claim cannot be confirmed.

Baqaei said mediation is underway involving other countries in the region, and a framework for how talks should proceed could be completed within a few days.

Last week began with threatening tones from both the US and Iran, but this weekend both sides spoke of taking steps towards concrete talks.

"Iran is talking to us, and we'll see if we can do something, or we'll see what happens. We have a large fleet on its way there," Donald Trump said on Friday.
