The Iranian Football Federation says it is in talks with FIFA about moving the country's group-stage matches in this summer's World Cup from the United States - currently at war with Iran - to Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has opened the door for it, but FIFA has so far said that the game schedule remains as planned.
From Iran's side, the plan still seems to be to participate in the World Cup, but not on American soil.
"We will prepare for the World Cup. We will boycott the United States, but not the World Cup," the federation's chairman, Mehdi Taj, said in a video published by the state-controlled Fars news agency.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The opening match will be played in Mexico City on June 11.
