Iran has announced that the strait, which carries a fifth of the world's oil and gas flows in peacetime, will remain closed to all but a small number of approved ships as long as the United States blocks its ports.

The toll money will be transferred to the Central Bank of Iran. The information about the revenue comes from Hamidreza Hajibabaei, deputy speaker of the country's National Assembly. It has not been confirmed by other sources, and it is not clear who paid the tolls to sail through the strait.

The customs arrangement for container ships in the Strait of Hormuz is an Iranian demand in talks with the United States to end the war in the Middle East.

An Iranian analyst believes that the United States' attempt to impose a blockade on Iran's ports to force Iran to compromise in the peace talks appears to have failed, at least in the short term.

If the blockade lasts more than two or three months, it could cause more damage, Saeed Laylaz, an economic analyst and professor at Shahid Beheshti University in Iran, said.
