Are the U.S. and Iran close to an agreement or not? The sides have had different views on the matter on Saturday, but Donald Trump wrote late Saturday evening that an agreement is almost complete.

Exactly what details remain is unclear, but the U.S. president is confident that a completed agreement that both parties can accept is close.

“The final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced shortly,” he writes on his platform .

A source with insight into the negotiations told the AP news agency that "significant progress" had been made in the talks, but warned that disputes could flare up at the last minute and that this was not the first time that an agreement had been said to be imminent.

Nuclear deal a key issue

According to the source, an agreement and an official end to the war would be followed by two months of talks on Iran's nuclear program.

Earlier on Saturday, the U.S. and Iran gave widely differing statements about whether the nuclear program and Iran's highly enriched uranium should be included in an agreement.

"At this stage, we will not discuss the details of the nuclear issue. We have prioritized an urgent issue for all of us: ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Iranian television.

But the issue of Iran's highly enriched uranium must be included and agreed upon in a "satisfactory manner," Trump said. Otherwise, he wouldn't even be talking about an agreement being reached, he told CBS News .

I'll just sign a contract where we get everything we want.

50-50 chance

In an interview with the news site Axios, he said at the time that there was "a solid 50-50 chance" of an agreement; otherwise he would "blow them to pieces."

Some would much rather see an agreement, while others would rather see a continuation of the war, he continued, denying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be concerned about an agreement that does not benefit Israel.

In his post on Truth Social, he wrote that he also spoke with Netanyahu in a separate conversation, which according to Trump "went very well."

Iran has not commented on the statement on Truth Social.
