A so-called child protection investigator has been appointed to review how children can be protected from sexual crimes.
The assignment includes reviewing whether penalties should be made stricter and whether the crime classifications should be changed.
"It is one of our darkest and most serious societal problems. No child should have to be subjected to abuse, and when what should not happen does happen, the reaction from the surrounding society must be strong, and in our opinion stronger than it is today," Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) says at a news conference.
The investigator will also make proposals regarding voluntary chemical castration, as a condition for conditional release, for people convicted of sex crimes or child pornography offences.
We want the investigator to see whether there is scientific support that such treatment can reduce the risk of relapse and, if so, in which situations it would be appropriate, Strömmer says.
