Investigator wants to try out extra tuition

Supplementary teaching is to be provided on a trial basis to pupils in half-classes or to a selection of pupils who are deemed to need more support, writes the government's investigator Pontus Bäckström on Dagens Nyheter's debate page.

Bäckström has investigated how students who need more compulsory education time to reach the goals can receive help in the compulsory school forms. He highlights, among other things, that 15,000 children leave elementary school each year without eligibility for upper secondary school.

The investigator proposes a three-year pilot project with students in grades 1, 4, and 7 at randomly selected schools. In one group, reinforcement education will be provided in half-classes, while corresponding education will be provided to a selection of students in a second group. The education will take place in connection with regular education. The Swedish National Agency for Education is proposed to be responsible for both implementation and effect evaluation.

Bäckström motivates the pilot project by saying that there are reasons that speak for both, "but I cannot predetermine which one is best."

The investigation will be received by Minister of Education Lotta Edholm (The Liberals) on Friday.
