The government has ordered an investigation into whether prosecutors should be allowed to decide to take direct custody of children to stop criminal behavior. But the investigator "definitely" advises against it.

"It is a system that is completely unnecessary and instead risks both incorrect handling and increased distrust of LVU," writes investigator Anders Hagsgård in DN Debatt.

The investigation, presented today, has reviewed the Act on the Care of Young People (LVU).

Among other things, the government commissioned a proposal that would allow prosecutors, not just the social welfare committee, to make decisions about immediate care - for example if a child has close ties to organized crime.

However, the investigator stresses the importance of LVU decisions being legally secure. An incorrect decision can have devastating consequences both in the short and long term, warns Hagsgård.
