Arlanda is not just about Stockholm and Uppsala, but one should see Arlanda from a national perspective. If we do nothing, it will completely clog up the E4, says Arlanda coordinator Peter Norman at a press conference.
His investigation, which is now being presented, contains a total of 80 proposals with the intention of making Arlanda Airport more accessible and attractive. The investigation takes its starting point in the number of air passengers at Arlanda is estimated to increase by 75 percent by 2050. This at the same time as car traffic on the E4 is expected to increase significantly over the next few decades.
The idea is to get the train traffic to the airport moving. To do this, Peter Norman that the state buys shares in the A-Train AB company, which is responsible for the Arlanda Express fast-train solution.
—A-Train is a brilliant invention, but it is very expensive. It is not reasonable to penalize those who commute to Arlanda, says Peter Norman.
The idea is that the station fee on commuter trains to Arlanda, which currently stands at 147 kronor, should be abolished. This will give travelers a cheaper alternative where the cost of a journey by commuter train is reduced from 190 kronor to 43 kronor.
The commuter train will be the basic alternative to get to Arlanda. We get a solution that is similar to London, you can take the subway to Heathrow, which is cheaper but takes longer, or take the Heathrow Express, which is a more expensive but faster alternative, says Peter Norman.
Extended platform
He also proposes an extended platform at Arlanda Airport for the trains.
— With an extension, you get space for two trains and increase capacity, says Peter Norman.
The investigator is also critical of the current solution where passengers from Terminal 5 cannot take the bus all the way to the terminal, but instead have to walk to get to the terminal building.
— It becomes a bit patchwork and it becomes long distances. If you were to rank Arlanda, you would see that it has quite long lead times, says Peter Norman.
In the investigation, it is also proposed that the Swedish Transport Administration is given the government's assignment to immediately prepare for the widening of the E4 in the height of Häggvik to strengthen this road section.
