The investigation will be prioritized by the European Commission.
The review will also focus on how AI overviews and AI applications are actually based on users' consent and how they are paid for delivering content to the services.
"This case is once again a strong signal of our commitment to protecting the online press and other content creators and ensuring fair competition in the growing AI market," said EU Competition Commissioner Teresea Ribera in a speech.
In a written comment to TT, Google writes that "this risks inhibiting innovation in a market where competition is fiercer than ever" and continues:
“Europeans deserve to benefit from the latest technology, and we will continue to work closely with publishers and the creative sector in their transition to the AI era.”
