The EU Commission is demanding further information from X about the platform's so-called recommendation system. They also want to ensure that X saves all information about future changes to the system throughout the year and wants access to data on technology that handles fact-checking and dissemination.
"We are firmly determined to ensure that every platform operating in the EU respects our legislation aimed at making the digital environment fair, secure, and democratic for all European citizens," writes Digital Commissioner Henna Virkkunen in a press release.
All of this is being done within the framework of an investigation that began in December 2023 into how X complies with the rules of the EU's Digital Services Act, DSA.
The fact that X owner Elon Musk has recently made sharp political outbursts against many EU leaders and even interviewed German far-right politician Alice Weidel on X has not played a role, the Commission assures.
These steps are being taken entirely independently of political considerations or specific events that have occurred recently, says Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier at a press briefing in Brussels.
