The approximately 80 hippos, descendants of drug lord Pablo Escobar's animals, are to be euthanized under a Colombian plan recently approved. But not if Anant Ambani has his say.

The billionaire's son has formally asked the Colombian government to stop the slaughter and instead allow the animals to be moved to a "permanent home" at his giant zoo, Vantara, in the Indian state of Gujarat.

Colombia's hippo population is descended entirely from four hippos imported by Escobar in the 1980s. The feral descendants are seen as a threat to both animals and people in the country.

Ambani's father, business magnate Mukesh Ambani, is ranked second richest in Asia and twentieth richest globally, according to Bloomberg.
