Last week, World Boxing announced that a mandatory gender test will be introduced for competitors over 18 years old to guarantee the safety of all participants in WB's competitions "especially considering the physical risks within the Olympic style of boxing (amateur boxing)".
Due to this, Imane Khelif is stopped from boxing in the Eindhoven Box Cup this week, the organizer stated on Thursday. She will only be welcome to participate in sanctioned WB competitions after she has undergone the gender test.
The Algerian and Lin Yu-Ting, Taiwan, were targets for a heated debate about gender identity during the Olympic Games in Paris last year. Both female boxers won Olympic gold in their respective weight classes.
The duo was disqualified at the World Championship 2023 because they failed the gender tests conducted by the scandal-tainted International Boxing Federation (AIBA). The International Olympic Committee (IOC) however allowed the boxers to compete in the Olympic Games and stated that AIBA's gender tests were not valid.
The IOC has now cut all ties with the corruption-accused AIBA. Earlier this year, the IOC gave a preliminary approval to the newly started World Boxing, which can now arrange qualifying competitions for the Olympic Games in the future.
