Illness behind Tre Kronor's goalkeeper substitution

Filip Gustavsson let in two goals on four shots and was substituted. Afterwards, the explanation came: illness. If we had known that, we would have made the change earlier, says Sam Hallam, the national team captain of Tre Kronor.

Sweden fell once again in overtime, 3–4, against Finland in the Four Nations.

One of the reasons – goalkeeper Filip Gustavsson was substituted after one period and two conceded goals when he didn't feel well.

Instead, Linus Ullmark came in.

It was nothing we knew about before the match. Then we would have probably substituted earlier. But I don't want to give any negative criticism about his match.

If Rantanen had hit the puck on the power-play goal, Gustavsson would probably have taken it. And the first one was a two-on-one situation. It was bad luck for us and bad luck for "Gus", but that's how it is sometimes, says Hallam, who was pleased with Ullmark's performance.

It was Gustavsson himself who said he wanted to be substituted.

We had a short discussion after the first period and he didn't feel a hundred percent. Then we made the decision.

Hallam believes it will be difficult for Sweden to take a final spot after two straight losses.

I think it feels very tough. Right after, I felt like we had given away an opportunity to the final. Then, when I got to breathe a little, it's a match tonight (Canada–USA tonight) that affects it.

It might be that when we go to bed tonight, we'll have an opportunity, and then it's three points against the USA that matter, says Hallam.
