The law was introduced in 2021 under then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and included, among other things, a ban on advertising that “depicts or promotes” gender reassignment and homosexuality.
The law was originally intended to increase penalties for child abuse, but was later expanded to include a ban on “promoting homosexuality.”
The new government, led by Péter Magyar, presented the proposal in September. In April this year, the European Court of Justice ruled that the law breached EU law.
It is a significant first step away from the previous government’s restrictive LGBTQ policies.
