The people, many of whom were women and children, were abducted from a village in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria.
According to a non-profit organization, a total of 416 people were freed on Saturday. The Nigerian military said in a statement that 360 of those kidnapped were freed through an “intelligence-led rescue operation.”
Mass kidnappings are common in Nigeria, and for criminal and armed groups they can be a way to obtain significant ransoms.
However, information from Nigerian authorities and media can be difficult to verify, as it is often uncertain and changes rapidly.
