The police in the Indian part of Kashmir have seized 668 books linked to an Islamist organization in the disputed area, where media control has been tightened in recent years.
The raids began on Friday in the city of Srinagar. The police claim to have acted "based on credible intelligence about secret sales and distribution of literature promoting the ideology of a banned organization".
According to booksellers, most of the seized books were published by a publishing house in New Delhi with ties to the Indian branch of the large Islamist and political organization Jamaat-e-Islami Hind. The organization was banned in Kashmir in 2019.
The seizure of books has been met with widespread criticism in Kashmir.
