The whale carcass was discovered earlier this week about 75 meters out in the water. On Saturday, favorable weather conditions made it possible to retrieve a transmitter from the whale. The location and appearance of the transmitter confirmed that it was Timmy.
The fate of the humpback whale has been an ongoing story this spring, and several high-profile rescue attempts have taken place in Germany.
The whale first stranded on a sandbank in northern Germany in March. After a number of rescue attempts, the whale was moved from the Baltic Sea and released into the North Sea from a specially built barge in early May.
