Human trafficking in Sweden is increasingly being controlled from so-called call centers abroad, according to the Swedish Police Authority's annual report on human trafficking, according to Sveriges Radio.

"Digital pimps" recruit women to Sweden from, among other places, South America and Ukraine and then control the entire operation online, reports Sweden's radio Ekot.

You have never even met your trafficker, but you are recruited digitally to be exploited in Sweden and everything is controlled via this call center, says Janna Davidsson, the police's national reporter to Ekot.

The recruited women are given an address in Sweden, which is often an apartment hotel. They are given a code to enter, which is also given to the sex buyers, and an advertisement is created. All payments go directly to the call center.

Human trafficking today happens on a subtle level. You can exert pressure and pressure in many different ways by threatening to expose them. They usually have a copy of their passport. They can also put them in fictitious debts, she tells Ekot.

Janna Davidson calls for more digital tools to tackle human trafficking online and believes that the police at the national level need to strengthen their ability to work against this type of crime.
