Warsaw's city council has voted almost unanimously to ban nighttime alcohol sales starting June 1.
The ban follows a popular pilot project in two districts of Warsaw, where alcohol purchases in stores were banned between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., leading to fewer arrests for alcohol-related crimes.
“We are addressing a real problem - namely noise, disturbances, government interventions and sleepless nights for residents,” says Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski.
Several of Poland's largest cities, including Kraków and Wroclaw, have already taken similar measures.
In 2022, Poland had the second-highest number of alcohol-related deaths in the EU.
