Prescription fraud or errors cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of kronor each year. For example, drugs intended for diabetes are prescribed for weight loss, which is not covered by subsidies from the state drug benefit.

Government investigator Anders Ahlsson is now proposing that Ivo be given access to information about all medications prescribed, not just certain ones.

This would allow Ivo to conduct more effective supervision of the pharmaceutical benefit, he says.

It is also proposed that Ivo be given the right to withdraw identification documents or to limit the right to prescribe while cases are under investigation. The right to prescribe should also be withdrawable for all types of medicines, not just those classified as narcotics.
