Researchers in Cameroon have followed a group of gorillas for eight years and documented how their reactions to humans have shifted from aggression and fear to curiosity and indifference.
Although poaching in the region no longer affects the animals' daily lives, the gorillas' behavior suggests that past hunting has made them more cautious, even years later.
The researchers approached the gorillas cautiously for several years before gaining their trust. The fact that this was possible is a positive result. The researchers believe that this could help improve opportunities for both conservation and ecotourism in areas where humans have previously caused damage.
The study has been published in the African Journal of Ecology.
