The partially shut-down U.S. government could reopen on Tuesday, U.S. time. At least that's what House Speaker Mike Johnson believes.

This weekend, parts of the U.S. government were shut down again, after Congress failed to approve a new federal budget before the deadline.

The budget package, which was passed by the Senate last week, also needs to be approved by the House of Representatives - which had a weekend recess.

After negotiations on Monday, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson is now hoping for a quick reopening.

"We will have all this clear on Tuesday, I am confident," Johnson told the Fox News television channel.

The House of Representatives has a slim Republican majority.

Funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which includes Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has been cut from the package after an agreement between Republicans and Democrats. The Democrats want to see changes at ICE, among other things.
