Alpine star Marcel Hirscher has seriously injured his knee and is forced to end the comeback season after just three competitions.

The 35-year-old Austrian, who competes for the Netherlands, confirms this on Instagram.

There, he writes briefly, to moving images from the latest competition:

"Last run of the season. What remains is my love for skiing. Thanks to everyone for your support".

According to Kronen Zeitung, Hirscher injured himself during a training run in Reiteralm. He tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee and was operated on in Graz on Monday.

The operation is described as successful.

Hirscher ended his career in 2019 after winning two Olympic Games gold medals, seven World Championship gold medals, and 67 World Cup victories.

In April this year, Hirscher announced that he would make a comeback and ski for his mother's homeland, the Netherlands.

The comeback never got to be a success before the accident occurred.

In the premiere in Sölden, he finished 23rd, and in Levi, he ended up 46th and did not get to run the second run.

Finally, he dropped out in the first run in Gurgl just over a week ago.
